HazePun press kit

HazePun is a free, independent web app that shows Singapore’s live PSI (Pollutant Standards Index) by region, powered by official NEA data, and pairs it with a Merlion mascot that masks up as the haze worsens and a library of deliberately terrible haze puns. It began in 2015 during the regional haze and was rebuilt as a fast, mobile-first site. Created by Wai Hsuen.

How it works

HazePun requests the real-time PSI feed from Data.gov.sg every 15 minutes, averages the five regional 24-hour readings, and picks a Merlion state and pun to match. If the feed is unreachable, the last good reading stays on screen with a “refresh delayed” label rather than showing made-up numbers. See the PSI guide for the official bands and how the Merlion reacts.
